As a member of the Colorado Archaeological Society an opportunity arose to assist on a great southwestern archaeological excavation in Dove Spring, Colorado. These ancient Indian ruins were occupied between A.D. 900-1050 Pueblo I or early Pueblo II and includes over 250 rooms and 50 kivas (places used for rituals and ceremonies), discovered in part by use of remote sensing studies during 2003 and 2004. The age of the site is a rare find in the San Juan Region. Luckily, while we were there the Cortez Journal newspaper was doing an article on the site. If you'd like to get an overview and see a few pictures of the archaeologists and the dig, check out:
I'm in the great kiva digging with three others - although I'm bent over and you can't really tell it's me! But, my name is in the caption.
This was a dream come true and I hope to do more at Dove Creek in the near future as field schools will likely be continuing next year. Here are a few pictures from the ruins of those that I worked with.
